Shopify vs WooCommerce for Selling in Mexico: 3-Year Total Cost

Published · Updated

Two laptops with online stores among shipping boxes and a card terminal

Across all three scenarios we modeled, Shopify costs less than WooCommerce over three years in Mexico: $6,306 USD less at 300 orders a month, $25,144 USD less at 1,500, and $142,016 USD less at 5,000. The reason is not the license. It is the payment gateway, which absorbs 73% to 96% of the total.

Disclosure: Iterando is a Shopify Partner and also builds WooCommerce stores. We get paid either way. This model exists because nearly every comparison out there is published by a platform that sells exactly one of them, or reuses US pricing that does not apply in Mexico.

Every figure converts at 1 USD = 17.0147 MXN, published by Mexico’s Diario Oficial de la Federación on September 1, 2026. USD amounts are rounded, so columns can differ by a dollar or two. Market estimates rather than published pricing are labeled in the text.

Which is cheaper over three years in Mexico, Shopify or WooCommerce?

Shopify, in all three. Assumptions are identical on both sides: annual billing, hosting scaled to traffic, a single market, CFDI invoicing counted inside “apps,” and build costs at published Mexican agency rates. Shopify collects through Shopify Payments; WooCommerce through Conekta at 3.4% + $3 MXN plus VAT.

Scenario (a): 300 orders/month at $47 USD — three-year GMV of $507,800 USD

Line item Shopify Basic WooCommerce
Platform, hosting and licenses $504 USD $1,124 USD
Payment processing $19,677 USD $22,236 USD
Apps and CFDI invoicing $1,904 USD $1,904 USD
Initial build $2,057 USD $2,645 USD
Maintenance $0 USD $2,539 USD
3-year total $24,142 USD ($410,775 MXN) $30,448 USD ($518,065 MXN)
As % of GMV 4.75% 6.00%

Scenario (b): 1,500 orders/month at $70 USD — three-year GMV of $3.81M USD

Line item Shopify Grow WooCommerce
Platform, hosting and licenses $1,404 USD $1,556 USD
Payment processing $139,009 USD $161,251 USD
Apps and CFDI invoicing $3,809 USD $3,809 USD
Initial build $5,290 USD $5,290 USD
Maintenance $2,539 USD $5,290 USD
3-year total $152,050 USD ($2,587,089 MXN) $177,194 USD ($3,014,908 MXN)
As % of GMV 3.99% 4.65%

Scenario (c): 5,000 orders/month at $118 USD — three-year GMV of $21.16M USD

Line item Shopify Advanced WooCommerce
Platform, hosting and licenses $10,764 USD $6,812 USD
Payment processing $729,957 USD $871,294 USD
Apps and CFDI invoicing $6,771 USD $7,405 USD
Initial build $12,930 USD $10,579 USD
Maintenance $6,348 USD $12,695 USD
3-year total $766,769 USD ($13,046,346 MXN) $908,785 USD ($15,462,705 MXN)
As % of GMV 3.62% 4.30%

In scenario (c), WooCommerce wins on licenses and on build cost and still loses by $142,016 USD. Strip out processing and infrastructure is $36,812 USD on Shopify against $37,491 USD on WooCommerce: a 1.8% gap over three years. Infrastructure is a rounding error; the gateway decides it.

An honest caveat about Mexican VAT

Conekta, Stripe and Mercado Pago all state their fees exclude IVA, Mexico’s 16% VAT, so the model adds it to the WooCommerce column. No official source confirms whether Shopify Payments rates carry IVA on top. Treating them as if they do is an estimate, not published pricing.

Apply VAT to both columns and Shopify still wins, by much less: $3,157 USD in (a), $2,903 USD in (b) and $25,223 USD in (c). The direction holds; the magnitude collapses. A comparison that quotes a six-figure gap without saying how it handled VAT is not usable.

What does each Shopify plan actually cost in Mexico?

Shopify bills the subscription in US dollars, not pesos, convenient for a US operator and misreported in most Mexican comparisons. Processing fees are denominated in pesos, with a flat $3.00 MXN per transaction, per Shopify’s Mexico pricing page.

Plan Monthly Annual (per month) Shopify Payments MX Surcharge without Shopify Payments
Basic $19 USD $14 USD 3.5% + $3.00 MXN 2.0%
Grow $52 USD $39 USD 3.4% + $3.00 MXN 1.0%
Advanced $399 USD $299 USD 3.3% + $3.00 MXN 0.6%
Plus from $2,300 USD — 3.1% + $3.00 MXN 0.2%

Shopify Payments does operate in Mexico, confirmed in Shopify’s own documentation. That kills the objection you will hear most often from Mexican developers: that you cannot use Shopify’s processor here and therefore pay twice. You can, and the surcharge column then does not apply.

What does WooCommerce actually cost in Mexico?

The WooCommerce plugin costs $0. Nothing else does. The trap is year one: promotional hosting and theme pricing make the first twelve months look cheap and hand you a different invoice in years two and three. These are list prices at signup and renewal.

Component Signup price Renewal price
WooCommerce (software) $0 $0
SiteGround GrowBig $4.99 USD/mo $29.99 USD/mo
Kinsta Single 40GB $42 USD/mo (annual) $42 USD/mo
Kinsta WP 5 (125,000 visits) $96 USD/mo $96 USD/mo
Domain ~$15 USD/yr ($250 MXN) ~$15 USD/yr
Astra Pro $99 USD first year $149 USD/yr (lifetime $279 USD)
Wordfence Premium (estimate) ~$149 USD/yr ~$149 USD/yr
UpdraftPlus Premium (estimate) ~$70 USD/yr ~$70 USD/yr
SearchWP (estimate) ~$99 USD/yr ~$99 USD/yr
Official extensions: Subscriptions · Memberships $279 USD/yr · $199 USD same
Product Add-Ons · Shipment Tracking · Min/Max $79 · $59 · $49 USD same
Maintenance retainer, Mexican agency $47–$206 USD/mo $47–$206 USD/mo

SiteGround goes from $4.99 to $29.99 USD at renewal, six times the entry price, and Astra from $99 to $149 USD. Any WooCommerce budget that shows you year one only is misrepresenting years two and three. Those five extensions add $665 USD a year if the catalog needs them.

What are MSI, OXXO and SPEI, and why do they matter?

They are the three Mexican payment behaviors no US comparison covers. MSI is meses sin intereses, interest-free installments the merchant subsidizes and shoppers expect on considered purchases. OXXO is cash payment at a convenience store against a printed voucher. SPEI is Mexico’s instant bank transfer rail.

These are not edge cases. A checkout offering cards only converts below a local competitor’s, and the MSI subsidy is a real line in your P&L, not a marketing toggle. Both platforms support all three through Mexican gateways, so this is a gateway decision.

What do Mexican payment gateways charge?

This is the decision that moves the most money, more than the platform choice does. Rates are public and the spreads between them run to full percentage points on everything you sell. All of these exclude IVA unless the row says otherwise.

Gateway Cards MSI installments OXXO / cash SPEI transfer VAT included?
Mercado Pago 3.49% + $4 (instant) · 3.19% + $4 (7 days) · 2.95% + $4 (30 days) 4.69% (3 mo) → 27.29% (24 mo) 3.79% + $4 3.79% + $4 No, plus VAT
Stripe MX 3.6% + $3 MXN (+0.5% international) from 5% (3 mo) 4% + $3 4% + $3 No, fees exclude VAT
Conekta 3.4% + $3 MXN (min. $5.40) 3.5%–12% non-BBVA · BBVA 4.9%–26.5% · Amex 3.9%–14.9% 2.6% + $3 $12.50 MXN flat No, plus VAT
PayPal MX 3.95% + $4 MXN (2.95% above $1M MXN/mo) n/a no no Its own page contradicts itself
Clip 2.99% + $1 MXN (payment link) 4.57% (3 mo) · 7.57% (6 mo) · 12.77% (12 mo) no no No, plus VAT
Openpay Not verifiable: no published pricing. Direct quote only.

The detail no global comparison captures: Conekta prices SPEI at a flat $12.50 MXN, about $0.73 USD, rather than a percentage. On a $118 USD order a card costs roughly $4.17 USD. Above that ticket size, pushing SPEI at checkout is five to ten times cheaper than cards. One warning: PayPal Mexico’s own fee page contradicts itself on VAT, so get its rate table in writing.

How much do interest-free installments cost the merchant?

More than the platform choice does. If 30% of scenario (b)’s GMV settles as 3-month MSI through Conekta, the three-year surcharge is $46,387 USD ($789,264 MXN). That is nearly double the gap between the two platforms in the same scenario, $25,144 USD.

MSI stacks on top of the card fee and scales fast with term: Mercado Pago runs from 4.69% at three months to 27.29% at 24 months. Turn them on with a minimum order value and short terms only, measure average order value before and after, and switch them off if it stays flat.

How does CFDI invoicing work, and does it make Shopify unworkable in Mexico?

No, and the cost is marginal: $1,013 USD over three years in scenario (a), $2,537 USD in (b) and $6,980 USD in (c). That is 0.9% to 4.2% of total cost on either platform, and providers ship Shopify apps and WooCommerce plugins alike.

What Mexico’s tax authority requires is real and platform-independent: a monthly CFDI global covering uninvoiced retail sales, XML retained five years, a payment complement within five business days, a valid digital seal certificate, and a credit note for every refund.

Provider Cost VAT
Facturapi $299 MXN/mo (~$17.57 USD) + $0.60 MXN per stamp VAT included
Facturapi E-Receipts + self-invoicing $599 MXN/mo (~$35.20 USD) + $0.40 MXN per receipt VAT included
Alegra (Shopify app) from $138 MXN/mo (~$8.11 USD) confirm
Facturama (Shopify app) from $490 MXN/mo (~$28.80 USD) confirm
Bind ERP from $1,650 MXN/mo (~$96.98 USD) confirm

What does it cost to build and maintain the store in Mexico?

Build ranges do not differ meaningfully between Shopify and WooCommerce in Mexico. These are published rates from agencies operating here, and they are why many US brands source the build in Mexico City rather than at home. Scope moves the number; platform barely does.

Project type Range (USD) Range (MXN)
DIY on a template $0–$294 $0–$5,000
Professional setup $882–$2,057 $15,000–$35,000
Conventional WooCommerce build from $1,528 from $26,000
Freelance $294–$4,702 $5,000–$80,000
Custom ecommerce $2,939–$7,053 $50,000–$120,000
Small agency $1,323–$4,408 $22,500–$75,000
Mid-size agency $4,408–$13,224 $75,000–$225,000
Fully bespoke $8,816–$29,386+ $150,000–$500,000+

The real gap is maintenance, at a market rate of $47 to $206 USD a month ($800–$3,500 MXN). On WooCommerce it is not optional: plugin conflicts after updates, breaking changes that take down checkout, and inventory desync with Mercado Libre. On Shopify it is optional. That is how we price our support plans.

Time zone matters more here than most US buyers expect. Mexico City sits at UTC-6 year-round, within an hour of US Central, so a Mexico-based team overlaps your full working day, and a same-day fix on a broken checkout is normal instead of a next-morning ticket.

Shipping is neutral between the two platforms. Skydropx and Envia.com are prepaid, with a free WooCommerce plugin and a Shopify app, an initial load around $118 USD and domestic rates from about $2.94 USD. Those rates are an estimate; they change two to four times a year.

When is WooCommerce the right call?

1. Catalog logic that does not fit a variant model

Tiered volume pricing, quote-before-purchase, configurators with dependencies, per-customer price lists, non-unit measures. When the business rule will not fit Shopify’s variant model, forcing it costs more in apps, workarounds and developer hours than you will ever save on processing fees.

2. Deep integration with a proprietary ERP

If inventory, pricing and orders live in a custom ERP, WooCommerce lets you write against the database and PHP hooks directly. Shopify routes you through its API and rate limits, a real constraint when you are syncing thousands of SKUs several times an hour.

3. A content operation that already ranks

If your traffic comes from a large blog, long-form guides or a resource hub that already earns rankings, WordPress is the better editorial tool. Store and content in one CMS, sharing taxonomy and URL structure, is worth more than the processing spread.

4. When Shopify Payments is not available to you

This is the mathematical crossover. With the external-gateway surcharge, WooCommerce wins above $5,203 USD of monthly GMV on Basic (2%), $8,062 USD on Grow (1%) and $3,145 USD on Advanced (0.6%). In scenario (c) with an outside gateway, Shopify rises to $893,700 USD and the two tie.

How big is Mexican ecommerce, and which platform leads?

Mexican ecommerce was worth $941 billion MXN in 2025, about $55.3 billion USD, growing 19.2% year over year, with 77.2 million digital buyers and 17.7% retail penetration. Mexico is the eighth-largest ecommerce market worldwide, per AMVO’s 2026 Online Sales Study.

On global platform share, HTTP Archive data from May 2026 gives WooCommerce 39.0% against Shopify’s 27.9%, but the top one million sites invert it: 6.08% to 3.12%. Shopify is growing 11.7% a year while WooCommerce declines 6.8%. One owns the long tail, the other owns the traffic.

No credible source breaks platform share out for Mexico specifically, so distrust anyone who shows you one: the numbers in circulation are extrapolations from global data. If you want this model run on your own order volume and payment mix, that is where our ecommerce development team starts.

Frequently asked questions

Which one is right for my business, Shopify or WooCommerce?

Shopify if you sell standard products, can use Shopify Payments and want low operating overhead. WooCommerce if your business logic will not fit a variant model, you integrate a proprietary ERP, your traffic comes from editorial content, or you would pay the external-gateway surcharge.

What does it cost to launch an online store in Mexico?

Roughly $0–$294 USD doing it yourself on a template, $882–$2,057 USD for a professional setup, $1,323–$4,408 USD with a small agency and $4,408–$13,224 USD with a mid-size agency. Fully bespoke starts near $8,816 USD. Ranges are the same on both platforms.

How do I handle CFDI invoicing if I sell into Mexico?

Through an authorized provider connected to the store. Facturapi charges $299 MXN a month (~$17.57 USD) plus $0.60 MXN per stamp, VAT included; Alegra starts at $138 MXN, Facturama at $490 MXN. You owe a monthly CFDI global, five-year XML retention and payment complements.

Which payment gateway should I use in Mexico?

It depends on ticket size. Conekta charges 3.4% + $3 MXN on cards and a flat $12.50 MXN on SPEI transfers, which is very cheap on high-ticket orders. Mercado Pago drops to 2.95% + $4 MXN if you accept 30-day settlement. All exclude VAT unless stated.

Are interest-free installments worth offering?

Only with a minimum order value and short terms. If 30% of sales settle as 3-month MSI through Conekta, the three-year surcharge on a 1,500-order-a-month store is $46,387 USD, nearly double the gap between platforms. Measure average order value before and after.

Can I migrate from one platform to the other later?

Yes, and it happens in both directions regularly. Products, customers and order history migrate cleanly. URLs, 301 redirects, reviews and custom integrations are the expensive part. Budget a migration as a new project rather than a file export, and plan a redirect map.

How long does an online store take to build?

A professional setup with a contained catalog takes three to six weeks. An agency project with custom design, invoicing integration and an ERP connection takes two to four months. Catalog cleanliness and your team’s availability set the timeline, not the platform.

Is WooCommerce actually free?

The software is; nothing else is. In this model, three years of WooCommerce runs $1,124 to $6,812 USD in hosting and licenses plus $2,539 to $12,695 USD in maintenance. SiteGround renews at $29.99 USD a month instead of $4.99, Astra at $149 USD instead of $99.

Want this model run on your own numbers?

Iterando builds on both Shopify and WooCommerce from Mexico City. We run the three-year math on your order volume, average ticket and payment mix before recommending either one. If the answer is to stay where you are, we say so.
